Success Of Cash For Clunkers Not Good News For All - WSOC-TV Posted: 19 Aug 2009 01:52 PM PDT Posted: 4:54 pm EDT August 19, 2009Updated: 5:27 pm EDT August 19, 2009 CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Cash for Clunkers program has been a huge success in the Charlotte area.Todd Horsfall of Modern Nissan showed Eyewitness News 30 cars on the clunkers lot that owners have traded in for brand new ones."I didn't know it was going to be quite this big. I was hoping it would be," he said.Modern Nissan has seen a 25 percent increase in sales this month just from the Cash for Clunkers program. According to the Greater Charlotte Automotive Dealers Association, the program, although less than a month old, has already generated $70 million in sales across the state, which means dealers sold about 18,000 new cars. VIDEO: Success Of Cash For Clunkers Not Good News For All "This has generated a lot of business -- even non-clunker business. It had people in the market," Horsfall said.He said that overall, his dealership saw a 40 percent increase in sales from last month. But the success hasn't been for everyone in the auto industry.Steve Howell of Lake Norman Auto and Tire said, "I knew immediately it would impact us. I knew people would jump on that program. Howell said he usually services about 80 cars a week, but he recently saw a decline in business."Oftentimes we'll quote a job, and they'll say they'll trade it and reference the Cash for Clunkers program," he said.Howell estimates he's fixing three fewer cars a week, which doesn't sound like a lot, but he said that's $900 in weekly sales that starts to add up.Horsfall said eventually the cars hes selling right now will need to be serviced, and the auto repair industry will rebound.Eventually it'll turn around. It's the same cycle, but overall it's a great program for customers," he said. Copyright 2009 by WSOCTV.com. All rights reserved.
