Brielle burglary suspect charged in two Long Branch incidents - Asbury Park Press

Posted: 26 Aug 2009 01:44 PM PDT

LONG BRANCH — City police have filed burglary and theft charges against a Manasquan man who they say stole a doctor's lab coat from a hospital and tools from a mechanic's shop.

They served Michael Joyce, 50, of McLean Avenue, with the complaints Friday at the Monmouth County Jail in Freehold Township, where he has been held since his arrest earlier this month in Brielle.

In that case, he burglarized a Brielle man's garage, but was arrested after the homeowner confronted him, then followed the fleeing man in his car until police arrived.

Long Branch Detective Lt. Robert Sama said Joyce is charged with burglarizing Enzo's Auto Repair on Broadway and with stealing the doctor's coat from Monmouth Medical Center.

According to criminal complaints signed against Joyce, he broke a pane of glass to get inside the garage, then stole more than $11,000 worth of parts and tools in April.

On Aug. 5, he entered a research facility at Monmouth Medical Center, went into an area open only to employees and stole a lab coat, according to the complaints.

Long Branch Detective Ben Cruz handled the investigation for the city, and he charged Joyce with two counts each of burglary and theft.

Joyce was arrested after he stole a garage door opener from a vehicle parked in a Woodview Road driveway, on Aug. 9, then went into the garage where he was confronted by the 67-year-old homeowner, Charles Salkeld, police said.

Joyce fled, and Salkeld followed him, and after a roughly 20-minute vehicle chase, police closed in and arrested the Manasquan man, authorities said.

Brielle police said they searched Joyce's vehicle and apartment and recovered about $70,000 worth of property believed to be stolen - including air conditioners, GPS units and electronics.

He is being held at the county jail, in lieu of bail set at $57,500.
