Pep Boys revs up earnings - Philadelphia Business Journal Posted: 08 Sep 2009 02:04 PM PDT Automotive after-market chain Pep Boys said Tuesday that second fiscal quarter earnings rose 42 percent to $7.7 million despite lower sales. The profit, equal to 15 cents a share, compared to $5.4 million, or 10 cents, in the year-earlier period. Pep Boys (NYSE:PBY) has 560 retail stores and 6,000 car-repair bays. Shares of the Philadelphia company closed 8 percent higher Tuesday at $10.09, though results were not posted until after the market's close. Pep Boys cited growth in service revenue, improved profit margin and tighter spending. For the quarter ended Aug. 1, Pep Boys had sales of $488.9 million, down from $500 million. On a comparable basis, measuring the same locations as a year earlier, sales declined by 2.3 percent. While merchandise sales declined by 4 percent, service revenue rose by 5.2 percent. "We are pleased with our performance for the quarter and year-to-date and remain on-track with our turnaround," said CEO Mike Odell, who took over as interim CEO in April 2008 and was named the permanent CEO in September 2008. "Our service center and commercial businesses show strong revenue growth and our core DIY retail business is stable. The current environment for sales of more discretionary items remains challenging for now." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

"We know there is value to a yellow pages directory offering something different for consumers," Klein said. "That is why we have differentiated all of our products, with our SuperGuarantee which provides consumers with a promise to help them make it right if for some reason the job was not done right." The SuperGuaranteeSM program, a national consumer guarantee initiative launched in February is designed to, among other things, increase spending in local economies by significantly lowering the risk associated with hiring contractors, plumbers, auto body repair shops and thousands of other eligible service provider category-based businesses. "We've already received favorable reaction from consumers who have seen and used the SuperGuarantee on Superpages.com and in the Verizon Yellow Pages," Klein said. "That said, if somebody doesn't want the directory, we will make it as easy as possible for them not to receive it." Worker trapped under trailer in Warren suffers broken leg - MyCentralJersey.com Posted: 08 Sep 2009 01:36 PM PDT WARREN TOWNSHIP — Rick Porcelli probably couldn't have picked a worse time to land himself in the potentially life-threatening predicament he found himself in Saturday. The 42-year-old vehicle-recovery worker was hooking up a trailer for transport when he became trapped underneath the tires of the trailer outside a local auto-repair business with no one else around and the likelihood that many of the shop's neighbors were closed or away for the long holiday weekend. Porcelli's ordeal outside Boulevard Body Works, 29 Mountain Blvd., began shortly after noon, according to police Lt. Robert Glen. "He (Porcelli) had been sent there to pick up a trailer," said Glen. "It appears he had crawled under the trailer to work on its tires and brakes (to prepare the vehicle for transport), and the trailer rolled forward." The movement left Porcelli's right leg pinned underneath the tires and left the Laurence Harbor resident virtually helpless. So he began yelling. "We received reports from homeowners of somebody yelling," said Glen, who said patrol units then were dispatched to the scene and found the trapped Porcelli. "Luckily, there were homes close enough" to where Porcelli was, noted the lieutenant. Rescue workers were able to move the tires off Porcelli's leg, and shortly afterward he was airlifted by NorthStar helicopter to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. His injuries were not considered life-threatening, said Glen. In addition to a fracture of the lower portion of his right leg, Porcelli suffered abrasions and contusions, according to Glen. He was listed in fair condition in the hospital's surgical intensive-care unit Tuesday afternoon. Porcelli is employed by All-Car Towing Company of South Amboy, which had sent him to the auto-repair business, according to Glen. |

BOCES students greeted with new classrooms - Observer-Dispatch Posted: 08 Sep 2009 01:14 PM PDT Students showing up for classes at the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES in New Hartford arrived to several new classrooms as the facility works to finish the first phase of its capital project. The building opened new or renovated classrooms for auto technology, auto body, electricity, construction trades, outdoor power equipment, welding, cosmetology, computer networking and repair, criminal justice and career exploratory. "It was great to open several new classroom areas today," BOCES Superintendent Howard Mettelman said. "The seniors who were returning had to adjust to new traffic patterns, but that went rather smoothly with the help of the staff here." Mettelman said some classrooms still need some finishing touches and work is still being done on the special education center set to open in January.
