Local Maaco stores freshen up Salvation Army kettles - Minneapolis-St Paul Business Journal

Posted: 09 Oct 2009 11:19 AM PDT

The Salvation Army's kettles are getting a fresh coat of red paint for the 2009 holiday season, courtesy of six Maaco Collision Repair & Auto Painting locations in the Twin Cities.

The Maaco shops in Minneapolis, Fridley, Little Canada, West St. Paul, St. Louis Park and Burnsville each will paint 200 kettles.

The Maaco stores are donating roughly $12,000 in materials and labor for the project, according to a press release from The Salvation Army.

"These kettles have taken a beating over the years from frigid weather and general wear and tear," Major Darryl Leedom, commander of the Twin Cities Salvation Army, said in a statement. "Maaco's donation will add years to the life of the kettles. It also will save us a bundle of money that we will use to serve people in need this holiday season."

Maaco will finish painting the kettles in time for The Salvation Army's "Kettle Kickoff" celebration Nov. 12, when they'll be distributed to more than 400 sites across the Twin Cities metro area.

The Twin Cities Salvation Army has an annual budget of about $24 million, nearly $3 million of which is raised in red kettles during the six weeks before Christmas.

Waterloo adds property to downtown land bank - Waterloo Cedar-Falls Courier

WATERLOO - The city is continuing to collect downtown property as part of an overall redevelopment strategy.

Waterloo City Council members voted unanimously this week to buy two vacant lots and a building on the west side of the central business district for about $296,000.

The sites include a former automotive repair shop at 212 Jefferson St.; an open lot at the corner of West First Street and the Highway 218 off-ramp, behind the building and next to the Iowa Community Credit Union; and another vacant lot on the corner of Washington and West Second streets, across the street from the credit union.

Selling all three properties, which the city has appraised for $260,000, were Dick and Harriett Lewis. The city is using general obligation bonds to cover the costs, which are repaid with future downtown property tax collections.

"These are three key sites in the downtown master plan," said Community Planning and Development Director Noel Anderson. "The building is empty and the other two sites are open lots, saving the city funds on relocation costs and demolition costs normally associated with the acquisition of downtown sites."

The city has been aggressive in acquiring properties in a proposed "entertainment/sports district" as part of a downtown master plan. The area is generally between Highway 218 and the Cedar River from Mullan Avenue to Park Avenue.

The city acquired virtually all of the property for the newly opened RiverLoop Expo and Waterloo Public Market. The city has already acquired several sites around the most recent purchases, including the former car wash, Zander Feeds and Priority 1 auto repair business, and is in negotiations with Operation Threshold for its flood-damaged buildings.

Consultant Vandewalle & Associates continues to work with the city and the nonprofit Waterloo Development Corp. to implement the downtown master plan, which includes plans for a large sports and recreation facility.

Two men have been charged with murder, and police said the killing stemmed from a fight over an auto repair bill.

Friday, the focus was on the victim, George Tyrones, 46, when friends and family said their final goodbyes at his funeral.

As Tyrones' family and friends left the church, they reflected on what a kind and generous man he was.

Ive known George since I was 12 years old. Hes my oldest, dearest friend, said Ed Vanderslice. George was a wonderful man, he touched a lot of hearts and its evident by this outpouring of people that are here and the love.

Tyrones was shot to death Monday at the European Autocare Center in Tucker. The shop was one of four businesses Tyrones owned.

Police said an irate customer got into a dispute with Tyrones over an $800 transmission bill before he killed him.

Its a tragic event that has taken place, said Vanderslice.

Officers arrested the alleged shooter, 41-year-old Troy Johnson, and charged him with murder. Abel Johnson, 30, is also charged with murder. Both are being held in jail without bond.

Meantime, the funeral procession took Tyrones to his final resting place at Floral Hills Memory Gardens Cemetery.

He had a quick smile and he loved his fellow man, said Vanderslice. He was a wonderful human being. It is such a tragic loss.
