Did you like Cash for Clunkers? Here comes sequel for appliances - Orlando Sentinel Posted: 16 Oct 2009 12:08 PM PDT Mark your calendars: What's being called Cash for Clunker Appliances has been tentatively scheduled for 10 days in April. Florida retailers would offer 20percent rebates before taxes on most energy efficient appliances from April 16 through April 25 next year, under the proposal submitted to the federal government by the Florida Energy and Climate Commission. Consumers would receive an additional $75 for sending their old energy-sucking appliances to the landfill rather than reselling them. Only federally designated Energy Star home appliances are eligible. Items covered under Florida's program include gas and tankless water heaters, refrigerators, room air-conditioning units, clothes washers and dishwashers. The rebates come through the 2009 federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and are designed to stimulate the economy and save energy, said commission Executive Director Jeremy Susac. Each state had to set its clunker appliance guidelines and submit them to the U.S. Department of Energy by Thursday. Florida was allocated $17.6million for rebates. Cash for Clunker Appliances is modeled after the wildly popular Cash for Clunkers auto program, which gave consumers with older vehicles rebates for purchasing more fuel-efficient models. Appliance shipments nationwide are down almost 15percent this year through August, according to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers. "One thing we have seen in this economy is that people are choosing to repair their appliances rather than replace them," said Jill Notini, the manufacturer association's spokeswoman. The state energy commission projected 65,000 appliances will be sold through the program, generating $54.8million in sales and $3.8million in tax revenue. Diane Lade can be reached at dlade@sun-sentinel.com or 954-356-4295. When will Cash for Clunker Appliances start? The program is planned for April 16-25. Florida has been given $17.6 million for rebates. If it isn't all spent in those 10 days, the program may reopened for the most popular appliances. How much will I get? The program gives a 20 percent before tax rebate on covered products, up to a total of $1,500 per household. You can buy multiple appliances. How will I get my rebate? That has yet to be determined. Some stores may be able to give you a rebate on-site when you purchase, others may require you to file paperwork. Which appliances are covered? Gas and tankless water heaters, refrigerators, room air-conditioning units, dishwashers and clothes washers. Eligible appliances must carry the federal Energy Star rating. 3 inches of snow possible by Sunday morning - Observer-Dispatch Posted: 16 Oct 2009 11:53 AM PDT The region could see up to 3 inches of snow by Sunday morning, the National Weather Service forecasts. A winter storm watch is in effect from Saturday afternoon until Sunday afternoon as a system of low-pressure brings moisture to a very cold Northeast. A storm watch means heavy snowfall is possible, although not probable. Initially, a storm watch had been issued Thursday beginning Friday night, but that's been pushed back more than 12 hours. "A heavy and wet snow is expected," the storm watch statement says. "This type of snow would stick to trees...especially those that still have their leaves... Power outages and damage to trees are possible." The worst of the accumulation could come in the state's Southern Tier as the storm moves up the coast. The weather service's forecast for the Mohawk Valley says there is a chance of both rain and snow Saturday afternoon, with less than 1/2 inch accumulating. But Saturday night, between 1 to 3 inches of the white stuff could fall, according to the forecast. Trace amounts of snow could then fall into Sunday afternoon, forecasters predict. Saturday's temperatures will be in the low 40s, while Saturday night's low would be 31 degrees, according to the forecast. On Thursday, shoppers in North Utica bundled up as temperatures barely inched above 40 degrees. But even that clear signal that winter is on its way could not prepare some for a weekend forecast that calls for snow. Amanda Clipston said she was shocked to hear that the National Weather Service had issued a winter weather watch, and that several inches of snow may fall throughout the Mohawk Valley by Sunday afternoon. "I don't like it at all," the Utica resident said. "We had no summer, and now it's going to be snowing. That's horrible." Utica resident Frank Frisillo was not happy to hear that, especially not in mid-October. He said it seemed too early for even a little snow to make an appearance. "I don't like snow in December, January or February," Frisillo said. "I hate the snow. The warmer the better for me." Thursday's recorded high of 41 degrees in Rome and expected overnight low of 28 degrees made it one of the coldest on record for Oct. 15, according to National Weather Service data. LaBounty confirmed that the potential for several inches of snow at this time of year is "pretty unusual" even in Upstate New York. "This time of year usually when it does snow you'll get some snow flurries or light snow," she said. "You may see an inch or two, but usually not several inches." Snow is most likely to fall Saturday night, but LaBounty stressed that bad weather is not set in stone. The front may move primarily east of the Utica area, for example, or the precipitation may turn into a mix or rain and snow, especially at lower elevations. If there is snow, however, roads could be wet during the day and slippery at night when it is more likely to accumulate, she said. Bill Sutherland, service manager at Tallman's Tire and Auto Repair in Yorkville, said some residents seem to have been expecting an early winter this year. His store began installing snow tires two weeks ago, and saw some customers coming in to inquire about them as early as late September. He said that traditionally the store wouldn't see that level of interest until closer to Thanksgiving. "Everybody this year seems like they're all planning ahead, very far ahead," he said. Sutherland suggested that in addition to snow tires, drivers should consider having their car batteries tested and checking their vehicles' fluids to prepare for the changing seasons.

1992 Acura Integra GS-R - Sid Vicious - Honda Tuning Magazine Posted: 16 Oct 2009 10:06 AM PDT Sid Cardenas' 1992 Acura Integra GS-R The 2nd generation Acura Integra was one of the most popular and heavily modified Hondas of its time. In the early-to-mid '90s, Ron Bergenholtz had the DA to beat; early 2000s saw Joel Ray's timeless build; and still later, Parnell Navarro and his orange Mugen Integra were a force to be reckoned with. Today, you don't really see too many DA Integras that capture the spirit like those of the past. Sure, you'll go to a meet occasionally and see one on a nice set of old school wheels, but it's either missing something or is beat up from years of use. It's almost impossible to find one with that unique style and flare possessed by the current generation-until now that is. Sid Cardenas unknowingly took the mantle and now has arguably the most recognizable 2nd generation Integra in current times. We say "unknowingly" because he never intended to land this role. No, this Integra came from humble beginnings. "I originally picked up this Integra after my wife found it on the G2IC forums," Cardenas says. "The guy only wanted $1,200 for it. I ended up selling the wheels on it for another $400 so when it was all said and done, I only paid $800 for a 1992 GS-R." For those who are unfamiliar, the DB2 Integras are actually quite rare. There were only about 2,200 units ever sold, and being able to find one in the used car market for only $800 was definitely a nice come-up. With such a low price however, the car had some obvious short-comings. "The Integra was pretty beat-up," Sid says. "Rust was eating up the quarter panels and the bumpers were rattled-canned." It was pretty apparent that the previous owner didn't know what he had or just didn't care enough to maintain it. Luckily for this GS-R, the new owner worked as an auto body tech at Beyond Auto body repair."Working at a body shop definitely came in handy. I did all the work on it myself, minus the paint." Cardenas had the coupe re-sprayed in Honda Championship White, slapped on his new Greddy SP2 cat-back, and thought he was good to go. The original plan was to just restore the Integra and keep it as stock as possible, but as any enthusiast knows, one modification leads to another and the rest is history. "Most of my ideas came from my coworkers," Cardenas says. "My painter, Red, had a BMW M3 at the time and he had smoked headlights and taillights. I really liked the look of it so we tried it out on my car. I loved the look so much that I ended up smoking my faded carbon fiber hood as well." Some of you readers may be familiar with his other co-worker; Arnel Ortiz (Sept '09 cover of HT). The owner of the now infamous Phaze2 Civic worked alongside Cardenas at the Temple City, California, body shop. They developed a friendship, often exchanging ideas while wrenching on each other's cars. "My first set of wheels was a set of Work Equip 03s that I bought from Arnel. I really liked the low offset and negative camber look. Hanging around Arnel and the rest of the Phaze2 guys taught me a lot about wheel fitment." The more he learned, the more aggressive he wanted his wheels to be. The Equip 03s just weren't cutting it anymore and were eventually replaced. Now under the slammed stance of the GS-R sits a set of low offset 16x8 Work XSA 02C rollers. This content has passed through fivefilters.org. |
Hybrid safety course for first responders - Southwest Times Posted: 16 Oct 2009 10:06 AM PDT Top Stories Hybrid safety course for first responders Local first responders are used to dealing with patients, rescues and traffic control at automobile wrecks, but concern over getting electrocuted by one of the vehicles probably rarely – if ever – enters their minds. However, the increasing number of hybrid electric vehicles on the nation's roads could add the potential of a new element of danger at wreck scenes.
