Monro Muffler reports higher sales and profit - Democrat and Chronicle

Rochester-based auto repair chain Monro Muffler Brake Inc. saw its sales and profits up sizably for its most recent fiscal quarter as it was boosted by marketing efforts and the closings of auto dealerships and their repair shops around the country.

Monro also raised its financial projections for fiscal year 2010 overall.

For the period that ended Sept. 26, which was the company's fiscal second quarter, Monro had sales of $136.6 million, up 14 percent from the same period a year earlier. After expenses, Monro's profit was $10 million, or 49 cents per share, up about 30 percent.

Through the recession, the company has posted quarter after quarter of earnings growth — results it has chalked up in large part to financially stretched drivers spending more money to keep their older cars on the road.

The sales growth was helped to the tune of $10 million by the 26 Autotire Car Care Center stores in the St. Louis area that Monro acquired in June.

For the current quarter, Monro is expecting earnings of 32 cents to 35 cents per share, which would be a 5-cent to 7-cent improvement over the comparable quarter last year.

For fiscal year 2010, Monroe is expecting sales of $553 million to $563 million, up from its previously announced range of $515 million to $530 million, and its earnings to be $1.44 to $1.48 per share, up from $1.35 to $1.45.

Pointing to comparable store sales up 10 percent in September and 12.5 percent in October, CEO Robert Gross said in a statement that the chain is "pleased with our continued strong momentum entering the third quarter as we are executing well and maximizing our opportunities for market share expansion."

The large houseboat was nearly beached and extended more than 50 feet into the lake. A depth-finder had shown the cove was 15 feet deep and they couldn't see the bottom.

Oliver was talking with friends on the top deck when he crawled over the rail and dove head-first. Knifing into the water, his head hit the lake bottom and everything below his neck went numb.

"I dove 20 feet into four feet of water," he said last week. "Unfortunately, there was one spot with a little bit of a sandbar."

Oliver is known as a jokester, so his buddies didn't react immediately to seeing his body floating face-down on the surface. He could not move his arms and legs; all he could do was hold his breath until someone came to help.

Two of his friends are emergency medical technicians and soon realized it was no joke. They jumped in, turned him over and brought him to shore, while someone called 911.

When the sheriff's boat patrol arrived, responders put a neck collar on Oliver and strapped him to a backboard for transport to the Don Pedro helipad. Medi-Flight took him to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.

Oliver freely admits the June 26 incident was his fault, a mistake that paralyzed his body from the neck down and put him in hospitals for 6½ weeks.

Still, his efforts to regain the use of his limbs have inspired hundreds of people who have planned or attended events to raise money to help with his medical expenses. His surgeon has said he will never walk again, but Oliver has other ideas.

"When the surgeon told me in the hospital I would be a quadriplegic, I said you don't know me," Oliver said. "I told her I will not be a quadriplegic and I will walk back in here someday."

The diving accident has posed the biggest challenge for the self- employed businessman, who has enjoyed sports, dirt-bike racing, camping with his sons and other hobbies.

The impact crushed a vertebra in the middle of his neck, pushing one of the broken bones into his spinal cord. A surgery at Memorial, two days after the incident, reconstructed the vertebra and fused it with two others to stabilize his neck.

The spinal cord wasn't severed but was badly bruised, causing the paralysis. As the swelling has gone down in the past few months, feeling has gradually returned to his shoulders, arms, thighs, knees and toes.

It's an encouraging sign, but Oliver has also been told that people with spinal cord injuries often get feeling back within the first six months and then it's uncertain how much they will improve.

"There is a good possibility of improvement," said Laurel Swisher, his mother. "Whether or not he will walk again is doubtful. He is very strong willed and determined to walk again."

Oliver, who is divorced, "temporarily closed" his auto repair business in Denair and moved back in with his parents.

He gets around the house in an electric wheelchair; his sons Matt, 17, and Cody, 13, are often there to help him out of bed in the morning and give moral support.

For months he has worn a metal halo, fixed to his head with titanium screws, to keep his spinal column in line as it heals. To cheer up his dad, Matt decorated the halo with flaming "Metal Mulisha" motocross stickers.

Monro sales, profits rev up - Rochester Business Journal

Monro Muffler Brake Inc. on Monday reported record second-quarter and six-month results, beating Street estimates.

Net income rose more than 30 percent to a record $10 million from $7.7 million in the second quarter last year. Diluted earnings per share were 49 cents, compared with 38 cents a share a year ago.

Analysts had expected diluted earnings per share of 47 cents on sales of $134.06 million.

Sales for the quarter ended Sept. 26 increased nearly 14 percent to a record $136.6 million, compared with $119.9 million a year ago. New stores contributed $10 million, while the 26 Autotire stores acquired in June contributed some $8.4 million.

Comparable store sales—or sales at stores open at least one year—increased 7.4 percent in the second quarter, compared with a 4.5 percent increase a year ago.

"We are delighted with our continued strong performance and positive traction that we experienced in the second quarter, which was driven by effective in-store sales execution and our ability to capitalize on favorable macro factors," said Chairman and CEO Robert Gross. "We are pleased that we continue to gain market share, both organically as a result of our effective business strategy and positive impact of dealership closures, as well as through our recent value-priced acquisitions."

The recent acquisitions of Tire Warehouse Central and Midwest Tire & Auto Repair are expected to add some $90 million to annual sales, Gross added.

For the six-month period, net sales increased more than 10 percent to a record $264.7 million from $240.3 million. Net income increased nearly 26 percent to a record $19.4 million, or 95 cents a diluted share, compared with $15.5 million, or 77 cents a diluted share, in the second quarter last year.

Monro forecasts third-quarter comparable store sales growth of 6 percent to 8 percent and diluted earnings per share of 32 cents to 35 cents.

For the full year, the company anticipates sales of $553 million to $563 million, with comparable store sales growth of 6 percent to 7 percent. Monro is forecasting diluted earnings per share of $1.44 to $1.48.

"The integration of our three recent value-priced acquisitions into the Monro family are progressing as planned and we believe that we are well-positioned to take advantage of additional acquisition opportunities as they arise," Gross said. "As we look to the second half of our fiscal year, we remain optimistic about our prospects given the favorable trends that we are currently experiencing in both our business and in the industry."

Shares of company stock (Nasdaq: MNRO) were up nearly 6 percent at $34.22 in morning trading.

New LEGO Universe screenshots reveal more of NetDevil's enigmatic MMO based upon the plastic building bricks, showing a "range of experiences available to players."

Among the items on display are the starting zone, where "players must familiarize themselves with their minifig avatar and build a rocket to exit the zone safely," a fireman and ninja fighting a robot, and "tension and excitement" as minifigs repair a bridge.

"Players will be able to build with an abundant supply of virtual bricks," an accompanying press statement explains. "They'll be able to add these creations to their own personal space or to areas within the game's diverse environments."

LEGO Universe was originally scheduled to arrive on PC in the fourth quarter of 2008, with the Auto Assault and Jumpgate developer now planing a 2010 release.
