An easy fix for tires that will not stay properly inflated - Salem News Posted: 28 Nov 2009 03:00 AM PST Q: I have a 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback with 100,000 miles. The current Michelin tires were new at 70,000 miles. The problem is trying to keep them properly inflated. Three of the four constantly drop to 20 psi, and I have to fill them each week. If there were a leak, wouldn't they go flat? A: Most likely, the problem is with the rims. It's not unusual that the rims rust out on the Subaru cars. However, we don't have to throw these rims out. Most shops that sell tires can grind down the rust on the rim bead. After all the rust has been removed, a bead sealer compound is applied to the bead edge of the rim and allowed to dry. At that point, the tire is remounted on the rim, inflated, leak-tested and balanced. And just like that, your problem is resolved. Q: I have a 1997 Chrysler Cirrus, and about a year and a half ago the computer went. We had a repair shop put in a used one. Now when we go to get it inspected, it will not read on their equipment. The car runs great and has no issues other than it can't pass the emissions test. Is there anything I can do? The computer may be a year older than the car, we were told, and this is why it's not reading on the state's machine. A: You may have to apply to the Registry of Motor Vehicles for a waiver. However, we have no idea what computer went into the car. Questions will be raised, such as, "Is the computer meeting EPA standards for that year's make and model car? Is the computer capable of turning on a check engine light if there is a problem?" The Registry looks at all of the preceding items and works closely with the EPA to be sure all cars meet the standards for that year's make and model. Q: In April of this year, I bought a 2007 Cadillac SRX4. The computer says I still have 50 percent of oil life left, yet when I check, the oil is pretty black. I'm used to changing oil every 3,000 miles, but at the rate the computer is working I will have gone over double that amount. The vehicle had 33,000 miles when I bought it and, shortly afterward, at 36,000 miles, I had the oil changed. It now has 42,000. The oil changes at the dealership are expensive, but the car is still under warranty. How reliable is the computer, and are there any recalls or bulletins warning of trouble? When the car is out of warranty, I plan on doing the oil changes myself. I believe the manual tells how to reset the oil life monitor. A: You don't have to go back to the dealer for your oil changes, as long as the proper oil is used in your car as per Cadillac recommendations. It is not harmful, and it will not void your warranty to change the oil more frequently than the computer tells you to. You keep changing your oil every 3,000 miles. You're doing just fine, and I think your Caddy will last you a long time. Car Care Tip: I send my gratitude to all subscribers of this newspaper, and all the staff that keep this column in print each and every week.
