Church member allegedly trashes church after dispute over $70 repair ... - KREM Posted: 22 Dec 2009 01:52 PM PST Posted on December 22, 2009 at 10:11 AM Updated today at 2:16 PM ******
SPOKANE -- An angry church member caused a lot of destruction at a North Spokane Church early Tuesday morning. The Spokane County Sheriff's Department says the dispute was over a $70 electric repair bill. That bill apparently sparked a tirade overnight. The suspect, Mark Heitman, allegedly used his truck to ram the Country Crossroads Christian Church at 7011 North Altamont. That was his last stop, but before doing that, he went on a rampage at the church pastor's home. That pastor, Dan Eubank, told us Heitman went to his home first and broke out windows in his truck, assaulted Eubank and then headed for the church. Eubank said that he believes Heitman was upset over repair work he had done for the church. "He'd done work on the church and we paid him with a check not cash, I didn't have cash and he got mad," said Eubank. Heitman rammed the church building several times with his truck, apparently trying to get in. When he did break in, he reportedly broke nearly every window, television and computer screen, and most of the lighting fixtures. He also allegedly smashed the church instruments, and even crushed the toilets. Damages are estimated at tens of thousands of dollars. Sheriff's deputies say they found Heitman at Auto Masters on North Nevada. A friend working at the shop said Heitman was crying and felt terrible for what he'd done to the church, and that he was planning on turning himself in. Country Crossroads Christian Church has a congregation of about 120 people and has been serving the community for over 15 years. Pastor Eubank is waiting on the insurance to assess the situation to get his church up and running again. Heitman is being charged with second degree burglary and malicious mischief. Governor Granholm looks back on rocky year for Michigan - WWMT Posted: 22 Dec 2009 01:30 PM PST MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – On Tuesday, Governor Jennifer Granholm took a look back at what was certainly a rocky year for Michigan.
From the struggles of the auto industry, to school caught on the losing end of a budget battle, to skyrocketing unemployment, 2009 has been difficult, to say the least.
"I think for most citizens and businesses, all of us here, we recognize that things have utterly changed.
Newschannel 3 was in Lansing Tuesday for the year-end review of a tough year.
The governor called 2009 one of the most difficult years for the state's economy and one of the most difficult for the state's budget process, but said she believes that Michigan is laying planks for a new economic base.
"It's really been a watershed year," said Granholm. "The old economy is gone."
2009 saw both General Motors and Chrysler declare bankruptcy, education funding and local revenue sharing both saw substantial cuts.
"If somebody were to ask me what has been the major disappointment of 2009, it certainly has been the budget struggle," said Granholm.
Granholm said during her year-end wrap-up that the state's economic transition wouldn't happen in twelve months.
"The lesson of this year has been so stark in that it is diversify or die," said Granholm.
The governor cited job gains in 2009 as progress, more than 160,000 potential positions created with tax credits, almost 60,000 of those are in the industries the governor has been concentrating on, life sciences, alternative energy, advanced manufacturing, and homeland security.
"If we are to make a successful transition to a knowledge economy, we have to have knowledge workers," said Granholm.
Granholm says lawmakers can still reconsider cuts to the Promise Scholarship and K-12 education.
"I believe there still is time to repair," said the governor.
She also applauded lawmakers for the reforms to make Michigan eligible for federal Race to the Top funds.
"Even if Michigan doesn't win the money that's associated with it, these were important reforms anyway," said Granholm.
Granholm said she hopes those reforms will help lead Michigan to further economic recover in 2010.
"Took us 100 years to get here, we're not going to move out overnight in being solely reliant on automotive," said Granholm. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. |
Relatives accused of stealing guns arrested on grand theft charges - Star-Banner Posted: 22 Dec 2009 12:40 PM PST Taken from a gun cabinet at the home were five rifles, three shotguns and a semi-automatic handgun, valued at $3,380; two Dewalt battery chargers valued at $219; and $1,800 worth of electronics. Joshua Eugene Teaters, 22, and his aunt, Patricia Jean Teaters, 53, were found at their home at 4022 N.W. 19th Ave. in possession of the guns. Joshua Teaters told detectives his aunt drove him to get the firearms and that he put them in the trunk of the vehicle, but he denied going into the home. Authorities had responded to Northwest 42nd Place after receiving a report about someone carrying what appeared to be a handful of sticks from a home on Northwest 42nd Street. A witness told deputies he saw a man - later identified as Joshua Teaters - wearing a black hoodie sweatshirt and black pants walking from his neighbor's home. The witness said he noticed the man place the items by a large tank across the street near an auto repair garage. He said the man then returned to the neighbor's home, where he lost sight of him. Not long after, the witness said, a red or maroon vehicle driven by a woman pulled up next to the repair garage and the man got out of the vehicle. The witness said he approached and the alleged suspect walked up to the tank, said he wanted to urinate and asked the witness if he saw the things behind the tank. The witness said no, and Teaters said, "nice find," then began loading the rifles in the trunk and left in the vehicle. The vehicle drove by a short time later, minus Joshua Teaters, who was then seen riding a bicycle. Teaters, the witness said, was wearing a white T-shirt, black pants and a hoodie – the same one he was wearing before – on his head. Two other witnesses told deputies about a conversation they had with Teaters at the auto repair garage. Deputies issued a bulletin. While searching the area, they spotted the vehicle at 4022 N.W. 19th Ave. The aunt and nephew were then arrested. The younger Teaters is familiar to the Marion County Jail. On Sept. 17, he was charged with violation of probation for battery and was released Oct. 29. The week before, he was charged with giving false information to a law enforcement official in an alleged crime. From May 9, 2008, through Nov. 9, 2008, he was arrested for burglary of a conveyance, petit theft, burglary and drug possession. Patricia Jean Teaters has never been arrested. Joseph Teaters, the father of Joshua, told the Star-Banner that if his son did the crime, he "needs to do the time." As for his sister, he said he finds it "hard to believe she would do something like this." "She's a good woman, and to the best of my knowledge, has never been arrested before," he said. "My son," he said, "has been to jail before." Contact Austin L. Miller at 867-4118 or austin.miller@starbanner.com. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Islanders answer the call - Hawaii Tribune-Herald Posted: 22 Dec 2009 11:00 AM PST That man talking to himself in the produce aisle of the supermarket may not be so crazy after all -- he may just be taking an important call. Wireless cell phone headsets are a booming business on the Big Island, thanks in no small part to the County Council's decision in August to ban the use of cell phones and other mobile electronic devices while driving. Police will begin ticketing drivers who violate the law on Jan. 1, with fines of $150, or as much as $500 in the event of a collision. According to Traffic Safety Coordinator Dieter Blattler, enforcement should be a snap for the Hawaii police. "It's easier to spot than people not wearing seat belts," he said. "Basically, if we see someone holding a phone up to their ear, there needs to be a traffic stop initiated." The law makes an exception, however, for drivers using hands-free mechanisms, such as speaker phones and wireless Bluetooth headsets. Businesses that sell the devices say customers have been lining up to buy headsets for their phones. "We've seen a sharp increase in interest in wireless headsets since October," said Verizon Wireless store manager Kaniela Pau. "I would say about three-quarters of our customers who buy a headset specifically mention the new law as a reason." The sets offer a variety of features and range in price from $24.99 to $130 for the top-of-the-line models with noise-canceling functions. His car has a manual transmission, and holding onto a cell phone became a tricky proposition when he was traveling between jobs.
