Consumer Reports Offers Tips For Car Care

LINK: Consumer Reports - Cars

(KDKA) With money so tight, you may be ignoring that strange noise under your hood.

But Consumer Reports says that could be a big mistake and turn your car repair into a real horror story.

Domenic DiSiena says he has seen a lot of car repairs that could have been avoided in his 35 years working as a mechanic.

"The young lady was driving the car with a check-engine light on for approximately a week," said DiSiena, of a Volkswagen Beetle. "Now, if she would have had the check engine-light diagnosed it would have told her - it's coolant."

Instead, the car overheated, the motor blew and it cost $3,000 to $4,000 to replace.

Consumer Reports has spoken to automotive mechanics across the country who have told equally scary and costly stories.

Experts say that with routine maintenance and early fixes when something starts to go wrong can save you money.

Exhibit A: A transmission rebuild can cost about $3,000.

"If your transmission fluid is too low, it's probably because of a leak," says Jon Linkov, of Consumer Reports. "If you do have to add fluid, don't overfill. That'll make it worse."

Exhibit B: An engine replacement can be a $3,000 to $6,000 job.

"To prevent this, check your oil level once per month," said Linkov. "And remember to change your oil and the timing belt according to the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual."

Exhibit C: A new catalytic converter that can cost $900.

"A catalytic converter can become overtaxed if your engine isn't tuned and starts to malfunction," added Linkov. "So, don't ignore that 'check engine' light when it comes on, and make sure you get regular tune-ups."

The bottom line is that catching car trouble early will spare you expensive repair bills down the road.

You can refer to your owner's manual to see when you should take your car in for maintenance - everything from oil changes and tire rotations to tune-ups.

Also, it can help to put reminders on your calendar to schedule an appointment at your garage.

Vendor denies Times Square van charges - Fresno Bee

Posted: 01 Jan 2010 01:33 PM PST

Van slides over embankment in Grand Canyon park

Six passengers escaped with non-life threatening injuries after the van they were riding in slid over the edge of a Grand Canyon National Park embankment.

The National Park Service says emergency crews responded to a call Tuesday evening and found the van about 25 feet below the rim at the park's Navajo Point.

Park spokesman Shannan Marcak says two people were taken to Flagstaff Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Four others spent the night in a small community outside the park.

Suspect in shooting near Lemoore ID'd

3:17 p.m.: The suspect arrested in the shooting death Wednesday night of a man at a mobile-home park near Lemoore has been identified as 19-year-old Salvador Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, a Lemoore resident, was booked into the Kings County jail. He faces a charge of murder with a gang enhancement, said Robert Waggle, a Kings County sheriff's detective.

Man shot by Fresno sergeant likely not armed

Update: Authorities today released the name of the man shot and killed by a Fresno police sergeant Tuesday and said the man apparently was not armed.

Steven Anthony Vargas, 32, of Fresno was shot about 3 p.m. after crashing his sport utility vehicle into a van parked in front of a house on the north side of McKinley Avenue, east of Ninth Street, in central Fresno.

Witnesses told police Tuesday that Vargas was armed with a gun. Other reports said he was armed with a knife or machete.

What's Fresno thinking?

I recently attended the Planning Commission hearing concerning the revocation of the Van Ness Auto business permit.

It was an education in city priorities. I learned that the Code Enforcement division has a section called the "Strike Force," which was created after the Crippen fire disaster, which took 23 days to put out and cost $2 million. The event was the first time the city ever revoked a business permit. Van Ness Auto is the second. And the great environment and safety issue? Parking.

It seems Van Ness Auto would park a few cars on the street that were waiting to be worked on. The Strike Force was implemented "to monitor those most sensitive uses and businesses that could have a more direct impact on public health, safety, and welfare."

Panel delays Van Ness garage decision a 3rd time

A central Fresno garage with a loyal clientele but some angry neighbors remained in limbo late Wednesday as the Planning Commission again postponed its review of a city shutdown order.

After its third consecutive four-hour hearing, the commission delayed a final decision on Van Ness Auto Repair until Jan. 6. Commissioners gave little indication of which way they may be leaning.

Customers and other supporters of the garage's owner, Jim Medina, waited to speak on his behalf only to be told they would have to wait.

NEW YORK -- A street vendor arrested after a parked van caused a bomb scare in Times Square denies forging the vehicle's registration and other charges.

A defense lawyer said Friday that 36-year-old George Freyre doesn't even own the van. Prosecutors say he told police it was his.

Authorities shut down part of the tourist hub for hours Wednesday after realizing the van had been parked for two days with blacked-out windows and no license plates. It contained only clothes and a peddler's stand.

Freyre was released without bail after his arraignment Friday. The Palisades Park, N.J., man also is charged with using a bogus law enforcement parking placard.

Defense lawyer Bruce Wenger says Freyre turned himself in to police only because "they were looking for him."

You Don't Own Everything In Your Combine - AgWeb

Posted: 01 Jan 2010 01:11 PM PST

You may own your combine, cotton picker, tractor or self-propelled sprayer, but you don't own everything in it. Manufacturers maintain ownership of diagnostic software and many other programs in any on-board computers. If you or a local non-dealership mechanic wants to access on-board diagnostics or replace system software, you'll have pay a licensed dealership to do the work.

It's a situation similar to what shadetree mechanics have wrestled with for the past decade in cars and trucks. Auto manufacturers have linked most systems in cars and trucks to on-board computers. Everything from low-tire-pressure sensors to fuel injection controllers now require expensive, often dealership-exclusive diagnostic equipment to diagnose, re-set or repair problems.

Some view this as an effort by automotive and farm equipment manufacturers to force consumers to deal only with licensed dealerships. They fear this is a concerted effort to drive non-licensed, independent mechanics out of business and make it impossible for do-it-yourselfers to do it themselves.

U.S. Representative Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y. introduced last year the Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act (HR 2057) to require vehicle manufacturers to offer neighborhood repair shops and do-it-yourselfers equal access to repair and diagnostic information. The focus of the bill--now stalled in committee--was on consumer vehicles. Its potential effects on farm equipment is unknown.

Is it right or wrong for vehicle and equipment manufacturers to keep diagnostic and other technologies to themselves? Should anybody be able to access on-board information on modern farm machinery? Does it annoy you that you can't turn off the "Check Engine" light on your pickup truck's dashboard without a trip to the dealership? Is it right that while you own the hardware, pieces and parts in your farm machinery, the equipment manufacturer still owns the actual computer programs that make it run?

I feel your pain. Until I traded pickups last summer, I drove my old Ford for six years with the "Check Engine" light glowing on the dashboard because I had done the diagnostics and knew there was nothing mechanically wrong. I simply refused to spend the money to pay a dealership--or buy an aftermarket "code reader"-- to turn the darned light off.

Radio ga ga - Daily News and Analysis

Posted: 01 Jan 2010 12:50 PM PST

Mumbai: Radio has grown through consolidation and has continued to garner a significant share of media revenues in the last few years. Most suppliers that operate FM channels also own inventory in other mediums and are able to offer bundled packages to advertisers. Radio has the benefit of having both a national presence — with most stations present in over 15 cities — and localisation — with most metros well covered with more than 3-4 station options. Radio also has significant reach within major cities such as Delhi and Kolkata, where radio penetration is as large as TV penetration. Radio accounted for the highest growth of any medium just two years ago - it has grown from around 22 stations in 12 towns to over 250 stations in 80 towns. Listenership is not limited to time inside cars and the growth of the youth segment is helping the spread of FM radio, which mainly consists of music channels due to restrictions around news broadcasts. DNA talks to four experts, who expect the medium to grow 17% each year over the next five years, at which point it will account for 5% of all advertising in India.

2010 will set the tune for the industry

Tanvi Garg

From 'Binaca Geetmala' to 'Morning No. 1 by Malishka'… it has been a long journey for radio in India.

In the earlier days, radio had a social texture. It was a medium for people who could not read or write. The content was news, songs and programmes with a rural focus. But with television gaining popularity, radio has evolved.

Today, radio is an interactive medium with a personal touch. Earlier, a radio presenter sounded like someone from another planet, but now a RJ connects with listeners better. He is one of them.

Apart from connecting with audiences through phone calls and SMSes, RJs are also interacting with them via blogs, Facebook and Twitter.

According to PricewaterhouseCoopers, the Indian radio industry is estimated to grow by 18% in 2009 to Rs 980 crore, and it will be worth Rs 1,900 crore by 2013. This reflects the potential of radio. Being an underutilised medium, in times of uncertainty, growth of radio is certain.

With the roll out of Phase III, 2010 will be the turning point for the FM radio industry. It will bring 700 additional frequencies across 237 cities as against the current 250 frequencies across 90 cities. Phase III policy reforms are also likely to bring along news and current affairs and an increase in FDI limits. 2010 is also likely to see the resolution of music royalty issue and an option of owning multiple frequencies. All this will lead to better and newer possibilities. In simple words, it will lead to more choice for radio listeners.

My personal wish list for 2010 is to see programming differentiation through engaging innovations and specialisations. I wish 2010 will see better measurement of radio performance with inclusion of more markets in RAM (Radio Audience Measurement). I wish it will also see great radio advertising because that is where the true magic of radio is.

Content creation by advertisers, relevant brand integrations, interactive advertising, and creative messages customised for radio should become the focus.

While the advertising industry is facing an enormous challenge of 'an economy in repair mode', 2010 will definitely be a golden year for radio. It will see radio's share climbing up to 6% from the current 3-4%. It will also see radio becoming mainstream like television and print. Radio will definitely mature as a medium.

With key segments like entertainment, retail, auto, FMCG showing growth, which are potential high spenders on radio, the future of radio looks bright.

Value solutions need of hour

Tarun Katial

Who wasn't affected by the economic slowdown! Housewives, students, businessmen, working professionals, real estate, retail, metros, Tier II markets, no one could escape the ripple effect of the global meltdown in 2009.

And, as we exit the year, memories of 2009 are not the only thing we take ahead. I believe what the country at large is taking ahead is a change in attitude - "expect more from what you have" versus just "expect more".

Even as we see signs of recovery, this change is mindset is clearly here to stay. As an industry, the media sector will need to learn to accept and cope with this new mindset prevalent amongst advertisers. Return on investment has a new meaning, stretching the rupee a new context, 'value' has a new benchmark.

With advertising budgets being curtailed across the board with little let up in targets, advertisers expectations from their media partners delivery has grown dramatically.

Radio needed to re-invent itself quickly in this environment and the industry has stood tall to the task. The inherent strength of the medium, delivering high reach at high cost efficiency was not enough to satiate the needs of a demanding clientele.

Broadcasters moved from selling vanilla radio to into a 'solutions' space offering holistic services beyond radio to clients.
