The grandmother of a 6-month-old boy who died this weekend from what authorities say was severe abuse is in shock and disbelief, she said Monday.

"He was about as happy a baby as I've ever seen," said Edna Mae Tinsley of her grandson, London Brantley. "When you have a baby that nice, it's hard to believe someone would treat him bad."

"You turned off the light and he went to sleep with a smile, and he woke up the next morning with a smile," said Tinsley, 57.

London was her first grandson.

The boyfriend of London's mother, 23-year-old Juan Vega, was arrested and charged with killing him on Sunday.

Tinsley said her son, London's father, married London's mother when they found out she was pregnant, but separated soon after the birth.

Tinsley lives in North Augusta, S.C., and runs an auto repair shop with her husband. They cared for London about one weekend a month, she said.

They were supposed to pick him up this weekend, but plans and other family members coming to visit interfered. Tinsley rescheduled the visit for next weekend.

On Saturday, she rushed to Charlotte when the hospital called: London had been shaken, badly.

"He had tubes all over. He had a shunt in his head, all kinds of fluids going in and coming out," Tinsley said.

London died Sunday afternoon. "He's not hurting anymore. That's about the only good thing in this," Tinsley said.

Owner of 22 Midas auto repair shops settles fraud allegations - Los Angeles Times

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 01:54 PM PST

Maurice Irving Glad, the owner of 22 Midas auto repair shops, agreed today to pay $1.8 million to settle allegations from the California attorney general's office that his shops charged customers hundreds of dollars for repairs they didn't need.

"For years, Glad ran a bait-and-switch scam, in which he deceptively lured customers into his Midas shops with cheap brake specials, then charged them hundreds of dollars more for unnecessary repairs," Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown said in a statement announcing the settlement.

Midas International Corp. will acquire Glad's 22 shops and honor all guarantees or warranties previously made or given to customers, the attorney general's office said in the statement.

The settlement came after a four-year undercover investigation into Glad's shops by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair to make sure Glad's Midas shops were in compliance a 1989 injunction placed on the businesses for similar violations, the attorney general's office said.

The investigation found that Glad was in violation of the 1989 injunction on his businesses and regularly advertised $79 to $99 brake specials at his Midas shops to draw in customers and then often charged another $110 to $130 for unnecessary brake-rotor resurfacing, the statement said.

In some cases, customers were charged hundreds of dollars more for repairs that were never performed, the attorney general's office said.

Last June, the investigation led to a lawsuit by the state attorney general's office, the Alameda County district attorney's office and the Fresno County district attorney's office.

Glad has agreed to pay $1.8 million in damages, investigative costs and attorney fees as a part of the settlement, and he is permanently barred from engaging in any business that requires any type of license or registration issued by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair, the settlement said.

Glad's 22 Midas shops are located in Campbell, Clovis, Concord, Dublin, Fremont, Fresno, Hayward, Manteca, Merced, Modesto, San Jose, San Leandro, Turlock and Walnut Creek.

Anyone who believes they have been overcharged by an auto repair shop can file a complaint with the California Department of Consumer Affairs by calling (800) 952-5210 or online at www.autorepair.ca.gov "> www.autorepair.ca.gov .
