CHICAGO – Mired in ongoing recalls, Toyota emphasized safety features as the automaker unveiled a face-lifted version of its Avalon large sedan at the Chicago auto show today.

"Nothing is more important to us than the safety and reliability of our vehicles," Bob Carter, general manager of Toyota U.S. sales operation said, adding that the automaker has already repaired 220,000 of the 2.3 million vehicles affected by its recent recall for faulty accelerator pedals.

Carter said Toyota dealers will get a software update to fix the antilock brakes in Prius hybrids later this month. A fix for a similar repair to brakes in the Lexus HS 250h hybrid will be available shortly, he said.

The 2011 Avalon will feature a new pedal assembly developed to remedy that problem and an electronic brake system required to fix Toyota's earlier recall, which accounts for about five million other vehicles.

The Avalon, the Toyota brand's largest car, goes on sale this spring. Other safety features will include seven air bags.

The Avalon should have an EPA rating of 20 m.p.g. in the city and 29 m.p.g. on the highway, Carter said.

Lincoln cops nab graffiti suspect - Omaha World-Herald

LINCOLN (AP) — Lincoln police say a 20-year-old man is through painting the town.

Officer Katie Flood said a graffiti artist suspected of vandalizing 20 properties the past month was ticketed at his apartment early Tuesday. Jacob Adams was caught after he allegedly tagged an auto repair shop.

Police found 13 cans of used spray paint in two of Adams' backpacks and a pair of sneakers that matched tracks in the snow near the business.

Flood said Adams could be responsible for 20 graffiti-related incidents in Lincoln since Jan. 18.

Adams was cited and released on suspicion of vandalism, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Flood said the drugs and paraphernalia were spotted in plain sight in Adams' apartment.
