Town to put 27-year-old fire truck back on front line - Enterprise Posted: 19 Oct 2009 12:47 PM PDT The town is hoping to put out a potential financial fire by putting a 27-year-old fire truck, which was donated to the town, into service for less than $1,000. Last week, Bridgewater selectmen accepted a donation of a 1982 Maxim fire truck that was refurbished four years ago by the town of Millis, but recently scrapped at locally owned Chuckran's Auto Parts. The vehicle will replace the town's current Engine 1, a 1992 vehicle whose engine blew last month during an annual inspection test. "For less than $1,000, we're going to put that truck in service," said Fire Chief George J. Rogers, Jr. He said that a replacement motor for the 1992 truck, which has a $5,000 trade-in value, would cost $22,000. He calls the plan a "Band-Aid approach for the next two years" until a lease on a 2007 pumper truck is done and the department can finance a new engine. "I'm pretty sure we're going to get two or three years out of it even though it's 27 years old," said Rogers. The chief, who said his department spent $13,000 of its $35,000 repair budget during the first quarter of the fiscal year, has asked selectmen to place a financial placeholder on capital project funds to purchase a new fire truck in 2012. He plans to use parts from Eng1 1 to repair, Eng. 2, which has a transmission that does not go into reverse. The Bridgewater fire fleet also includes a 2008 tower truck, which was paid for by the state to service the prison and college, and three ambulances — two model year 2005, and one 2000. Rogers gave the Board of Selectmen some good news: That ambulance receipts are on target to reach $1 million this year, and the department brought in $36,000 — including $13,000 in manpower and $19,770 for the rental of equipment — for its recent work on the Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz movie filmed in town last month. But he also said the fire department is tracking $9,000 a month in overtime because of contractual time off, but says those expenses will soon decrease, since the department has been awarded a grant that will allow the re-hire of one laid-off firefighter. The grant was awarded to 13 cities and towns in the state based on demographics, population, run volume, and hourly staffing levels. He says he has also applied for another $100,000 grant from the state's Executive Office of Public Safety that would further help with staffing levels and reduce overtime costs.
